Accomplishments

South Kona Police Station in Captain Cook, fully staffed and open 24/7

Land has been purchased and building design is underway.

Roads

Mamalahoa Highway Bypass Road - I continue to advocate a legal solution for completing and opening the much-needed Mamalahoa Highway Bypass Road that does not cost the taxpayers money.

La‘aloa Street Extension to Kuakini Highway - Community design is completed and engineering is underway. I used contingency funds for traffic calming measures.

Kainaliu Village - County will be creating traffic turnarounds, improving sidewalks and curbs, and adding another parking lot.

Haukapila Street (Hospital Road) to Kona Community Hospital was repaved.

Health Services

I worked with the the West Hawai'i Community Health Center (WHCHC) to open a Keiki Clinic in Kealakekua to serve the mauka area. I used $50,000 of my contingency funds to support a program that pays for children who have no insurance or are underinsured for medical, dental and behavioral services.

Using contingency funds, I supported the Mobile Care Van that provides mobile dental services to rural areas of our side of the island.

Flood Plain Management

My effort to strengthen laws to reduce potential flooding was defeated by special interest groups, but I’m not giving up. Flooding is a serious problem affecting our district. I’ll continue to promote more legislation to protect our residents.

Rock Face at Napo‘op‘o Junction

After years of community effort, an earthquake, and my persistence, the rock face at Napo‘opo‘o Junction was finally cut back improving the line-of-sight and reducing the number of accidents at that intersection.

Ke Kama Pono Boys Safe House in Captain Cook (State of Hawai‘i)

I supported the Department of Human Services in establishing a home for teenage runaways and truants. This is the first therapeutic and secure home of its kind for boys on the Big Island, and allows the boys’ families to visit them on-island.

Increased Accountability

Passed a charter amendment for the ballot for an Independent Auditor to provide accountability to the taxpayers.

Passed a charter amendment for the ballot to increase fines for serious code violations.

Established fines for elected and appointed government officials who violate the Code of Ethics.

Passed a charter amendment for the ballot for separate East and West Hawai‘i Planning Commissions.

Ongoing Efforts

Provide guidelines for redistricting to give every voter an equal voice.

Support a West Hawai‘i Civic Center.

Support passing the Kona community Development Plan so it has the force of law.
